Does a VM fully protect your home network or should I also use a VPN?

Hi, I’m a new scambaiter and wondering how I can fully protect my network on my VM I’m using (VirtualBox if you’re wondering). The real name of my network is not actually visible to scammers, but does this fully protect me from them DDoSing me or leaking my IP or should I also use a VPN?
