Got a voicemail from a possible scam baiter or scam victim

So I’m pretty sure a scammer somewhere has been spoofing his/her ID as my phone number.

Edit: I got an angry voicemail from someone who was saying some nasty stuff about scammers

please spread around information about how the number that shows up on the ID when a scammer calls is NOT the number they’re calling from. So reporting that number or calling that number will do no good.

If you’re going to report their number, you need to phish for it by talking to them

Not every scammer uses a spoofed number when calling people, a good example is the almost 5k scammer numbers posted here in the last year.

A simple way to check if a scammer number is spoofed:

  1. Hang up
  2. Call back

A good majority of scammers I interact with don’t use spoofed numbers. I really only see them using spoofed numbers more when they tell you they need to “call you from a secured line”.

I just don’t think it’s good to assume every single number is spoofed without actually checking first.

good to know, but almost every scammer who calls me out of the blue will be from a spoofed number in my area code

You can use a site called spydialer.com to check if a number is a VoIP or something else. It’s proven very useful to me. You can also use that website to listen to the outgoing voicemail.

Also…my real cell number was spoofed by scammers. For 3 months I got at least 3 calls a day from angry people asking why I called them. My cell phone company couldn’t help me. Luckily, after about 3 months it all stopped…. Which is what my cell phone company told me would happen.

Pop up scammers pretending to be Microsoft or Apple, from large call centers, often spoof the official number.

If you call them, and immediately mute the phone they often will call you back 4 or 5 times. It’s really sad how desperate they get.

Refund scammers rarely bother.

This is rare from my experience and is only when they call you back from their “direct line” which is what I pointed out in my original reply.

Yeah about half of mine are, sometimes the ones in my area code are actual scammer numbers and I can call back and it’ll go to them, other times it’s just a dead number or random person’s number

A few years back someone was using my phone number to scam and I would get some calls or voicemails. I have not gotten those though in a few years.
