Tried doing this with my Virtual Machine and My Laptop and I can’t use certain functions like disable remote input? Why is that? 
New versions of temviewer now require you to have the paid verson to use these options, older versions will still work though.

If I use the paid version, would a scammer be aware of that fact or could I successfully pass it off as the free thing that he’s supposedly instructing me to download?
The scammer should not recognize a difference if he does not check your license status under Help>About TeamViewer
